The City of Sheridan is responsible for the Municipal Cemetery. There are 5 private lodge cemeteries adjacent to the City cemetery. They are as follows: BPOE (Elks), FOE (Eagles), IOOF (Oddfellows), Masonic 8 Lodge and Masonic 43 Lodge. Questions about these cemeteries should be directed to the particular organization.
The Sheridan Municipal Cemetery crew does the general maintenance on the grounds. Irrigation is provided by a computerized watering system. It is not necessary to pay for this service.
The City of Sheridan conducts an annual clean-up of the cemetery usually beginning about April 1. Anything left on the graves at that time is removed and hauled to the city landfill. Decorations may be returned the week before Memorial Day. Any prohibited items will be removed on sight. While it is not unknown to have items stolen from cemeteries, it doesn't happen often here.
Ordinance 17-9 states: No trees, shrubs, or hedging, nor any coping, curbing, or enclosure of any nature, nor any iron or wire work, shall be planted, constructed, placed, or allowed to remain upon any burial plot; and no flowers or plants shall be placed thereon except in approved receptacles on, or immediately adjacent to, the marker base. No glass receptacles will be allowed.
City ordinances prohibit the planting of trees or shrubs on grave plots. You may plant most perennials and annuals. If you want to plant a tree in the cemetery arrangements can be made.
Ordinance 17-3 states: All graves may be marked and identified by grave markers which shall be made of stone, concrete, or metal, and which shall not exceed fourteen (14) inches in width, and thirty (30) inches in length for single graves, or sixty (60) inches in length for double graves. Markers may not exceed twenty-four (24) inches in height in the following areas of the cemetery: Sections 61, 62, and 70-105. Markers may be constructed to match an existing marker in the following areas of the cemetery: Sections 1-60, A, B, E, F, G, H1, H, I, O, P, Q, R1, R, and S. Any markers, other than the identifying grave marker, which are placed upon the grave shall be set flush with the ground surface.
